Destiny 2 Sets New Concurrent Player Record On Steam As Lightfall Launches - GameSpot

It is a big day for Destiny 2, as the game's long-awaited Lightfall expansion is out now. On Steam, the expansion's launch seemingly helped the game reached a new concurrent player record.

The game reached more than 300,000 peak concurrent players on Steam today, a new all-time high for the Bungie game. According to historical data on SteamDB, Destiny 2's previous concurrent player record was around 128,000 players, so Lightfall really did juice up the game's numbers as Bungie hoped.

Now Playing: Destiny 2: Lightfall - Launch Trailer

Destiny 2 is also available on console platforms, so the 300,000 peak concurrent player figure only represents a fraction of the game's total audience. It's expected that Destiny 2 on PlayStation and Xbox saw an uptick in usage coinciding with the launch of Lightfall, too.

Destiny 2 is a free-to-play game, and the Lightfall expansion is available by itself for $50 or via the Annual Pass for $100.

Lightfall ushers in a brand-new year in Destiny 2 and a new season, Defiance, featuring new activities to take part in, Exotics to collect, and weekly missions to engage in. For more, check out GameSpot's rundown of everything to see and collect in the new season.

You can also check out GameSpot's Lightfall story primer that recaps everything that's happened since the Beyond Light expansion's release in November 2020.

Twitter's decentralized alternative Bluesky arrives as an invite-only iOS app - The Verge

/

The Jack Dorsey-backed social network could be getting closer to becoming a reality.

An image showing three side-by-side screengrabs of Bluesky on mobile
Image: Bluesky

Bluesky, the decentralized project that originated within Twitter, has arrived on the Apple App Store as an invite-only social network, as first reported by TechCrunch. The listing also gives us one of our very first glimpses at the app, which closely resembles Twitter down to the timeline and profile pages.

The project’s backed by Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, and has been working on an app powered by its open-source social protocol for months now, called the Authenticated Transfer Protocol, or “AT Protocol” for short. Bluesky describes it as a “federated social network” where separate networks exist within a single hub.

According to Bluesky, AT Protocol is built based on four main ideals: account portability; algorithmic; performance; and interoperability. This framework is supposed to allow you to easily transfer your account data to another Bluesky provider as well as give you more control over what you see on a network, among other things.

While Bluesky initially made the app available in a private beta for developers in October, it appears the company’s willing to expand the test just a bit more now that it’s on the App Store. The website doesn’t offer any details about when the app could become available to the general public or how many testers are allowed to use the app, but it lets users join a waitlist for access.

The project’s origins within Twitter raised concerns about what would become of Bluesky following Elon Musk’s takeover, as it relied on the social network for funding. However, last year, Bluesky spun off as a separate company, noting that “independence is important to the success of the project,” and added Dorsey to its board.

Judging by the screenshots posted on the App Store and the ones included in TechCrunch’s article as part of a hands-on experience, Bluesky looks promising so far, featuring separate tabs for home, search, and notifications in addition to a Twitter-like “repost” ability. We don’t know when (or if) Bluesky will come to Android, but I sure hope it does. With more Twitter alternatives like Bluesky, Mastodon, and Hive gaining traction, it almost feels like the golden age of social networks again.

Lenovo's Rollable Concept Screen Seems Almost Like Magic - CNET

Motorola has already impressed us with its rollable concept phone at this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but parent company Lenovo is getting in on flexible displays too with its mind-boggling concept laptop featuring a screen that grows taller at the double-tap of a button.

Having seen it in person, it's almost like magic.

Andrew Lanxon/CNET

Seen on its stand at the mobile trade show, the concept device appears mostly as a regular laptop with a keyboard, trackpad and 12.7-inch display. That display is flexible, however, and actually slides in and out of the body of the laptop. A double-tap of a button on the side and the full length of the screen begins to slowly work its way out, resulting in a much larger 15.3-inch display with an 8:9 aspect ratio.

Andrew Lanxon/CNET

This tall screen format could be great for working professionals because it offers a lot more real estate for scrolling down web pages or for working on large documents or spreadsheets.

It's similar in principle to the tech used in Motorola's rolling concept phone, which also features an extendable screen that provides a larger surface for watching 16:9 videos. Like the phone, Lenovo's laptop is purely a proof of concept and there are no plans to put it into production or even to use the technology on future devices.

However, with clearly a lot of time, effort and money gone into the development of this laptop, it wouldn't come as a surprise if we see this tech in some form on sale a few product generations down the line.

You can now fly the largest aircraft ever built in 'Microsoft Flight Simulator' - Engadget

One year ago today, the largest aircraft ever built was destroyed during the early days of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Now, the Antonov An-225 Mriya is once again taking to the skies — albeit in Microsoft Flight Simulator. What's more, if you buy the add-on, you could help restore the only real-life Mriya that was ever completed.

The Ukraine-built Mriya was an ultra-heavy lift jet transport aircraft with six engines. It was the heaviest aircraft ever built and it had the largest wingspan of any plane at 290 feet. The Mriya, which had its first flight in 1988, was used to transport things like Soviet space shuttles, tanks, diesel locomotives and dozens of cars at a time.

A second Mriya was in the works, but it was never finished. There are plans to reconstruct the plane by using parts of the destroyed Mriya and pieces from the unfinished airframe. The project is expected to cost over $500 million.

The Microsoft Flight Simulator version of the Antonov An-225 Mriya is available in six liveries, including an Xbox Aviators Club one. It's in the in-game marketplace on PC today and will be available for the Xbox Series X/S and cloud versions later this month. The Mriya costs $20, with all proceeds going to the Antonov Corporation's Mryia reconstruction efforts. Meanwhile, iniBuilds, the team behind the virtual Mriya, has released a manual and other details about the plane on its forums.

Some Pixel phones are crashing after playing a certain YouTube video - The Verge

A video of a tense scene from Alien is crashing some Pixels. Extra spooky.

A specific YouTube video is causing some Pixel phones to crash, as reported by Android Authority. When those who are affected by the problem try to watch the video, their phone instantly reboots. Some, including Android Authority, have also said their phones present cellular network issues afterward. (Android Authority said those issues were fixed after another reboot.)

In a Reddit thread, some users report running into the issue with their Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 6A phones, and one Verge staffer’s Pixel 6 crashed when they tried to watch the video. However, the issue doesn’t seem to be affecting everyone; Android expert Mishaal Rahman says it didn’t crash his Pixel 6 Pro, while others in the Reddit thread say their Pixels can watch the video as well.

The video itself, which is two years old, is a scene from the classic sci-fi horror film Alien that’s available in 4K HDR. While we don’t recommend watching it if you’re on one of the potentially affected phones, here is the link to the video. It’s unclear what’s causing the crash, and we’ve reached out to Google for comment. However, some have speculated it comes down to the way the Pixels handle color, which is what apparently caused a certain wallpaper to crash some Android phones.

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi takes aim at Samsung and Apple with latest $1,000 device - CNBC

Xiaomi is trying to push into the high end of the smartphone market with the Xiaomi 13 Pro. It will pit the Chinese giant against rivals Apple and Samsung.
CFOTO | Future Publishing | Getty Images

Xiaomi launched its flagship smartphone globally on Sunday as the Chinese electronics giant attempts to take a slice of the high-end market and challenge Apple and Samsung.

The Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro were originally launched in China in December, but now the Beijing, China-headquartered company is bringing the devices to markets overseas.

The Xiaomi 13 Pro device sports a 6.73-inch display and the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset from U.S. firm Qualcomm. It has a triple-lens camera and other premium features like ultra-fast charging. The company talked up the capabilities of its camera that it "co-engineered" with German firm Leica.

The Xiaomi 13 starts at 999 euros ($1,053) while the 13 Pro starts at 1,299 euros.

Xiaomi had a rough year in 2022 with its smartphone shipments declining 26% year-on-year, according to research firm IDC, the biggest fall among the top five biggest handset vendors. The company swung to a loss in the September quarter, the latest financial results available.

Xiaomi has faced a number of headwinds, in particular a more difficult macroeconomic environment with a slowing economy in China. A total of 1.21 billion smartphones were shipped in 2022, which represents the lowest annual shipment total since 2013, according to IDC.

"Xiaomi is facing multiple headwinds inside China from an ever-popular Apple iPhone, a surprisingly strong Honor, and fickle Chinese consumers who often switch between Android hardware brands in a flash," Neil Mawston, an analyst at TechInsights, told CNBC via email.

Honor is the Chinese smartphone brand that was spun off from Huawei.

Xiaomi has turned into one of the biggest smartphone makers over the years via a strategy of bringing out high-spec devices at very competitive price points. It began pushing into overseas markets around seven years ago, pursuing a similar strategy. But it is now looking to push into the higher end of the market, where margins are higher and the market is still growing.

High-end smartphones, those that cost over $800, accounted for 18% of the total handset market in 2022, up from 11% in 2020, Canalys data shows. Xiaomi's push into the premium tier will pit it against Apple and Samsung, which will be a challenge for the Chinese rival. Samsung and Apple devices accounted for 92% of the high-end market in 2022, according to Canalys.

"Competing with Apple and Samsung is incredibly difficult. Not just matching market leading products, but particularly going up against enormous companies with exceptional brand awareness, high-end perceptions, experience focused solutions and product ecosystems with high user-stickiness," Runar BjĂžrhovde, research analyst at Canalys, told CNBC via email.

Xiaomi is the latest Chinese smartphone player that is trying to crack the high-end of the market. Oppo launched its first foldable phone for the overseas market this month that costs more than $1,000.

Apple iPhone thieves using simple trick to take everything, report finds - Fox Business

iPhone thieves who spied on a victim's passcode before stealing the Apple device can easily reset settings preventing its owner from accessing it.

According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, victims have reported phones stolen out of their hands or at bars and other public places, finding they had been locked out of their accounts.

Bad actors with knowledge of a passcode are able to easily reset the victim's Apple ID password in the Settings app.

They can turn off Find my iPhone, preventing the owner from tracking it or remotely wiping the device, as well as remove other devices from the account.

They can also set up a recovery key to prevent a victim from recovering the account.

In one case, a thief opened an Apple Card by finding the phone owner's last four digits of their Social Security number in photos. Another said she had lost photos of her family permanently. Most of the victims filed police reports and one filed an identity theft claim with the Federal Trade Commission.

Nokia launches smartphone you can fix yourself, jumping on 'right to repair' trend - CNBC

In this article

The Nokia G22 smartphone from Finnish firm HMD Global comes with a removable back to let you swap out broken parts.
HMD Global

The next smartphone to come from mobile icon Nokia is a handset that users can repair themselves.

The Nokia G22, developed by Finnish manufacturer HMD Global, is a standard smartphone with a 6.5-inch screen and a 50-megapixel main camera.

But it's the phone's outer shell and insides that make it special. The handset includes a recyclable plastic back which can be easily removed to swap out broken components.

Armed with tools and repair guides from hardware repair advocacy firm iFixit, a user can remove and replace the phone's back cover, battery, screen and charging port.

Adam Ferguson, head of product marketing at HMD Global, said that this process would cost on average 30% less than replacing an old phone with a new one.

Smartphone companies are increasingly working to make phones last for longer amid pressure from regulators to make electronics devices more sustainable.

Lawmakers in the European Parliament, for example, are calling for legislation that would force manufacturers to give users the "right to repair."

Right to repair refers to a movement among consumer rights campaigners to make it easier for consumers to repair their gadgets.

The European Commission's Green New Deal seeks to make the bloc a so-called circular economy by 2050, making it so that almost all physical goods can be repurposed, repaired, reused or recycled to minimize waste.

Repairing phones, in particular, has gotten more complex due to how tightly the battery and other components are sealed by glue.

Apple, which had long been reluctant to changes its repair policies, decided in November 2021 to launch a self-service repair program that lets customers buy parts to fix their own devices.

In December, the iPhone maker expanded this program to eight European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the U.K.

"As consumers increasingly demand more sustainable and longer-lasting devices, the ability to repair smartphones easily and affordably will become a key differentiator in the market," said Ben Wood, lead analyst at CCS Insight.

Around half of mobile phone owners in Europe would have their device repaired if it broke outside their warrant period, Wood said, citing CSS Insight's research.

There is one drawback with the Nokia G22 — it only meets the IP52 benchmark on resistance against damaging substances, meaning it is not immune to water damage.

Ferguson said it couldn't achieve this feature at the phone's price point.

The G22, which will be released in the U.K. on Mar. 8, starts at a price of £149.99 ($179.19). Replaceable parts can be bought individually from iFixit. For the battery, it'll cost £22.99; for the display, £44.99, and for the charging port, £18.99.

Ferguson said that, on average, consumers would pay 30% less replacing their broken parts than buying a new phone.

Nokia isn't the only mobile brand developing climate-conscious smartphones. Dutch firm Fairphone, for example, sells a range of phones that use repairable and replaceable parts.

Once a titan in the handset industry, Nokia has since taken a backseat as electronics giants Samsung and Apple rose to the top of the rankings. The firm is now known mostly for telecoms infrastructure sold to carriers.

Nokia sold its mobile business to Microsoft for 5.4 billion euros ($5.8 billion) in 2014. The unit was later bought by HMD, which was formed by Nokia executives in Finland, for $350 million. Nokia pockets a royalty fee on each phone HMD sells.

HMD said it's also planning to source more manufacturing of its phones in Europe. The company didn't specify where, citing security reasons. In a press release, the firm said it was "developing capabilities and processes to bring 5G Nokia device production to Europe in 2023."

The move highlights an ongoing movement from large tech companies of their supply chains away from China and other East Asian countries.

Kuo: iPhone 15 Pro Models to Feature Improved LiDAR Scanner - MacRumors

Sony will replace Lumentum and WIN Semi as the exclusive supplier of LiDAR Scanner components for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to the latest information shared by reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

iPhone 14 Pro Rear Camera
In a series of tweets today, Kuo said Sony's time-of-flight VCSEL has lower power consumption than those from Apple's existing suppliers. This would result in the LiDAR Scanner being more power efficient on the iPhone 15 Pro models, which Kuo said could either contribute to longer battery life or allow for the LiDAR Scanner to offer improved performance at the same level of power consumption as on existing iPhones.

Kuo said the improved LiDAR Scanner could benefit camera features, like Night mode and autofocus, as well as augmented reality uses. First introduced on iPhone 12 Pro models in 2020, the LiDAR Scanner can measure light distance and capture depth information, and the hardware is expected to remain exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models.

The Mac Mini is tiny but mighty, with the M2 model easily powerful enough for productivity chores and multitasking. The M2 Pro, meanwhile, is a low-key content creation demon, beating the Mac Studio's M1 Max version and on par with the MacBook Pro 14-inch with M2 Max.

On top of that, you get killer connectivity, with two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C connections, HDMI 2.0 (with 4K 240Hz and 8K 60Hz output), two USB-A ports, a headphone jack and gigabit Ethernet (upgradeable to 10 gigabit). The M2 Pro model adds two additional USB-C ports, making it even more useful for creatives with a ton of accessories.

The Mac Mini M2 won't replace your gaming machine, but it can handle nearly everything else you throw at it. We wouldn't recommend the overpriced storage or RAM upgrades either, as the M2 is much more efficient with RAM than typical PCs. Still, if you're looking for a cheap but powerful Mac, this is the way to go.
