PS5 Sales Break Q1 Record & Target More - Dark Horizons

With the long-standing supply chain issues from the pandemic resolved late last year, the first real look at how well the PS5 would sell came in the first quarter of this year, with the numbers announced this week.

Sony has revealed that the PS5 has sold 6.3 million units in the first quarter of this year – the highest number of Q1 consoles sales ever for any console across any generation.

The number brings total PS5 sales to 38.4 million, bringing it just shy of the PS4, which was around 41 million at the same time in its release cycle (without extreme shortages holding it back) before ultimately selling 117 million units across its lifespan.

This comes even as there was no blockbuster ‘system seller’ PS5 release during the first quarter of this year – the biggest title of the period being “Hogwarts Legacy” which was also on PC and Xbox Series X.

In addition, Sony President Hiroki Totoki mentioned in an earnings call today the company aims to “continuously accelerate penetration of PS5 and aim for PS5 selling units for the current fiscal year to be 25 million units – the highest ever for any PS console in history.” That’s up from the 19.1 million units it sold in the fiscal year ending in March.

The sales are likely to be helped by many of this year’s game releases finally forgoing previous-gen console versions (PS4, XB1) in favour of software developed only for the new consoles or high-end PCs – essentially forcing those who haven’t made the upgrade to do so.

Microsoft doesn’t report sales figures, but in February this year Ampere Analysis estimated the Xbox Series X/S had sold 18.5 million units to date. If accurate, that would put things in line with the last generation, where the PS4 outsold the Xbox One by around 2:1. Microsoft itself did reveal recently that hardware sales for the Series X|S were down 30%.

The Nintendo Switch, meanwhile, has racked up 122.55 million in sales since 2017, but its numbers are finally starting to flag as there’s a push for new hardware.
